Dark roast, medium roast and blonde roast. From fancy lattes, cappuccinos, Frappuccinos, drip coffee to Americanos, people spend thousands of dollars per year buying coffee at their favorite coffee shops or restaurants.
The problem is when you buy your coffee outside you have very little control over the ingredients and you don’t know what’s really being put into your fancy $8.00 coffee drink. Many times you also are getting excessive amounts of refined sugar in your coffee.
The benefit of experimenting at home with your coffee is that you can save tons of money, you can flavor it however you want to, control many of the ingredients and the amount (and type of sweetener) being added.
You can also make it tailored to any dietary guidelines you may follow such as plant-based or vegan.
Here’s a recipe for homemade French vanilla coffee that took me a week of trial and error to come up with. This recipe was actually an accident because all I was trying to do was save more money by making my coffee at home and taking it to work or running errands.
Even though I don’t buy ‘fancy’ coffees often, you’d be absolutely shocked at how fast normal drip coffee at $2.91 can add up in 1 month, let alone one year.
If you are a coffee aficionado, please feel free to whip up your specialty coffee (Ethiopean, Blue Mountain Coffee, etc) in your own particular way (espresso, americano, pour-over, etc) instead of using an instant coffee. Please note: I don’t own or really want a coffee machine, so instant coffee is my go-to for now 🙂
-1 tsp instant coffee
-1/2 coffee mug of hot water
-1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
-1 tsp vanilla extract
-2 tsp agave nectar (**add more accordingly as per your taste or none at all if you have certain dietary requirements**)
In your fav coffee mug, put the 1 tsp of instant coffee. Then add the boiling water. Give it a stir! Now add the agave nectar and vanilla extract. Add the vanilla almond milk and stir well!
Now enjoy! 😃
**Note: If you’re using a travel coffee mug to go to work or run errands, use the same recipe blueprint as above to fit your travel mug size making sure you adjust the amount of boiling water and almond milk you use. You may choose to add a 2nd tsp (or a 1/2 tsp) of coffee. And slightly adjust the agave nectar and vanilla extract.**
-About vanilla extracts…they’re not all created equal with the flavor. Some brands are better and more flavorful than others. Some taste very similar to the vanilla beans and others aren’t even close. That will determine how good the vanilla flavor is in your Vegan French Vanilla Coffee.
-Again about the instant coffee (people are passionate about their coffee!), I’m still figuring out what’s ‘good’ for instant coffee as I don’t have or really want a coffee maker. If you are a coffee officionado please definitely make your homemade espresso, or americano or pour-over or whatever you like. Of course the better the quality of coffee, the better the coffee will generally be.
