It’s May and it is Food Allergy Awareness Month in Canada! Food is a MASSIVE part of everybody’s life, families, cultures, celebrations and customs.
Food allergies affect millions of people worldwide: 🔹2.5 million Canadians, 🔹15 million Americans and 🔹17 million Europeans, to name a few. I am one of those people living with food allergies since childhood ✌.
The 8 most common food allergies are to: Milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, tree nuts, soy, fish and shellfish. Food allergies will cause death when anaphylactic in severity. Many people have some level of food allergy (do you get bloated? Unexplained weight gain? Phlegm in your throat? Itchy throat?) and have no clue they do.
So, my people, be aware of your surroundings and colleagues in the workplace. Be aware of cross-contamination and the food you bring to eat at work. Wash your hands!
Restaurants be aware of the food allergies and cross-contamination issues in food via contaminated cooking utensils in your business’s back-of-house. Also, uninformed staff doing unsafe things to food (like thinking it’s okay to just scrape off the top an ingredient a person is allergic to).
Safe eating peeps! 😄✌
